Council's Timely New Look

MAITLAND councillors will no longer be difficult to spot.

They voted on Tuesday night to increase the council's annual budget by $2000 to cover the cost of a corporate wardrobe for themselves.

Cr Vicki Galea said wearing uniforms would lift their profile in the community.

`We are often out representing the city and I think uniforms will help our corporate image,' Cr Galea said.

`We will be easily recognisable, easy to spot in a crowd and uniforms will raise the awareness of councillors in the community.'

The navy-coloured clothes, including blazers, trousers, skirts and scarves, are marked with the town hall clock, the council's logo.

Only council staff had worn the uniform but Cr Galea said nearly all the councillors were keen to wear the distinctive gear when they represented the city at functions, meetings and conferences.

`We all come from different walks of life and I guess it is a little like school but it will give us some uniformity,' she said.

The exact cost of the uniforms would depend on how many of the 12 councillors wanted them but Cr Galea said the council only proposed to refund 50% of the cost of the article up until $150.
